How the bloody thing works

A fridge in reverse — heats your water for a quarter of the cost

Heat pumps don't make heat — they shift it. That's why one unit of sparks moves four to five units of heat into your water.

1. Ambient air gets pulled in from the side

A quiet fan draws outside air across the evaporator. Even on a brisk 5°C Melbourne morning there's heaps of free heat hanging about in the air.

Free energy straight from the air

2. Compressor cranks up the refrigerant

The compressor squeezes the refrigerant under pressure, sending its temperature soaring before it heads down to the tank.

1 kWh in → 4–5 kWh of heat out

3. Hot coil wraps the tank and heats the water

Superheated refrigerant winds through a coil hugging the water tank, handing its warmth across to your stored hot water.

Up to 65°C stored hot water

4. Hot water, ready when you are

Your taps and shower pull hot water just like a normal storage system — except heating it cost you about a quarter of the power.
