Running costs

About $1,244 a year back in your pocket

Based on a four-person Victorian household — roughly 4,500 kWh of water heating a year at 30c/kWh. At a COP of 4.82, this unit only needs about 934 kWh to do the same job. Run it on the timer through the middle of the day and most of that comes off your roof, not the grid.

Every kWh you self-consume is worth 30c instead of the 3c feed-in you'd get for exporting it — that's the solar saving baked into the numbers below.

More grunt in the tank, and labour's covered too

The PASHW015-270-FL02-R290 runs R290 natural refrigerant through a condenser coil wrapped around the outside of a glass-lined 270 L tank — so the refrigerant never shares a wall with your drinking water. It puts out 3.6 kW of heat for 0.85 kW in, a COP of about 4.82, which is why it recovers quicker than the 2.0–2.8 kW units it usually gets compared to. Backed by a full 5-year parts and labour warranty.

COP 4.82 · R290 · 3.6 kW · 5 yrs parts & labour

How you can run it

Economic heating
The default and the one you want. Compressor only, no element — the cheapest way to heat a tank. You can still tap the booster manually if you need a quicker recovery.
Hybrid heating
Compressor and element together for the fastest recovery. Handy when the in-laws land or someone's run a bath. It flicks itself back to Economic once the target temp is hit.
Electric element boost
A one-shot boost on the 1.5 kW element that switches off the moment the target temperature is reached. Available on top of any of the other modes.
Vacation mode
Pop in the date you're back and the iStore sits idle while you're away, heating up just in time for the trip home.
Timer / off-peak
Two on/off windows a day. Set them over the middle of the day and the unit drinks your rooftop solar, or park them on off-peak tariff overnight.

Warranty has to be registered with iStore within 6 weeks of install — we lodge it for you on the day so there's nothing for you to chase.

01

Wrap-around condenser coil

The condenser wraps the outside of the tank rather than sitting in the water, so refrigerant and drinking water never share a wall. It also spreads the heat over a big contact area, which is where the fast recovery comes from.

02

R290 natural refrigerant

Propane with a global warming potential of 3 — not the R134a used by older units. It also carries heat better, which is why the newer iStore posts a higher COP than the model it replaced.

03

5-year comprehensive warranty

Tank, refrigeration and electrics are all covered for 5 years parts AND labour — not parts-only like a lot of the market. Register within 6 weeks of install to keep it valid.

04

Solar soaking built in

Set the two daily timer windows over your solar generation and the tank becomes a cheap thermal battery. iStore reckon on up to 75% off your hot water bill, more again on solar.

05

Wi-Fi and app control (270L)

The 270L is Wi-Fi ready — temperature, schedules, boost and performance tracking from your phone. The 180L Wi-Fi version is on the way.

06

Award-winning in Australia

Voted #1 heat pump by ProductReview.com.au buyers five years running, and engineered around Australian water quality and climate conditions.

Water quality limits for warranty

  • Total dissolved solids600 mg/L max
  • Electrical conductivity850 µS/cm max
  • Chloride250 mg/L max
  • Magnesium10 mg/L max
  • Sodium150 mg/L max

Melbourne mains water sits comfortably inside these limits. iStore also require a 500 kPa pressure reduction valve on the inlet — a pressure limiting valve won't do, and skipping it voids the tank warranty. We fit one as standard.

Straight talk

Our honest take on iStore

What we rate
  • Full 5-year comprehensive warranty — parts AND labour, not parts only
  • 3.6 kW heating output on the 270L, so it recovers quicker than most 2–2.8 kW units
  • R290 natural refrigerant with a COP around 4.8 at 20°C
  • Wrap-around external condenser — refrigerant never touches your drinking water
Worth knowing
  • 46.6 dB(A) — mid-pack on noise, so mind the bedroom window
  • Heat pump stops at -5°C ambient before the element steps in
  • Only two sizes, 180 L and 270 L
  • Wi-Fi is on the 270L only; the 180L smart model is still coming
