Running costs

About $1,232 a year back in your pocket

Based on a four-person Victorian household — roughly 4,500 kWh of water heating a year at 30c/kWh. At a COP of 4.33, this unit only needs about 1,039 kWh to do the same job. Run it on the timer through the middle of the day and most of that comes off your roof, not the grid.

Every kWh you self-consume is worth 30c instead of the 3c feed-in you'd get for exporting it — that's the solar saving baked into the numbers below.

NeoPower Black Diamond

1 kW in, 4 kW out — and three anodes to boot

The Black Diamond is NeoPower's workhorse all-in-one, built by IMACA out of Scoresby in Melbourne's east (est. 2010). R290 natural refrigerant, a published COP of 4.33, a smart touch screen with Wi-Fi, and triple anode corrosion protection — a fair bit more insurance than the single anode most tanks ship with. Rated to keep pulling heat out of the air down to -7°C.

Four operating modes

Standard mode
Heat pump only, sitting at 60°C by default and adjustable from 15–60°C. The everyday setting for most Melbourne homes.
Economy mode
Heat pump only at 55°C with a 10°C restart differential — fewer cycles, lowest running cost. Pair it with a daytime solar timer.
Hybrid mode
Heat pump lifts the tank to 60°C, then the 1.5 kW element carries it up to the set point (default 65°C, up to 70°C). Handy for a full house or a cold snap.
Element mode
Element only, 65°C default and up to 70°C. Your backup if the compressor is ever out of action.

01

1 kW in, 4 kW out

A published COP of 4.33 at 20°C air — around three times cheaper to run than a conventional electric or gas tank, and NeoPower reckon up to 75% off your hot water bill.

02

R290 natural refrigerant

400 g of propane with next to no ozone impact and an extremely low global warming potential — a world away from the older synthetic gases plenty of brands still run.

03

Triple anode protection

Three sacrificial anodes instead of the usual one. That's proper insurance in Melbourne's harder water areas and means less fiddling down the track.

04

Quiet at 42 dB

Quiet enough to sit down a narrow side of the house without the neighbours or the kids' bedroom copping it.

05

Touch screen + Wi-Fi

Smart colour touch panel on the unit plus the free Smart Life (or Tuya Smart) app on Android and iOS to schedule, boost and monitor from the couch.

06

Works down to -7°C

Rated -7°C to 43°C ambient, so it keeps pulling heat out of the air through a frosty Victorian morning without leaning on the element.

Straight talk

Our honest take on NeoPower

What we rate
  • Published COP of 5.4 — top of the pack, which drives big STC and VEEC counts
  • Variable-speed inverter compressor instead of on-off cycling
  • 7-year tank and 5-year compressor cover, R290 natural refrigerant
  • Colour touch screen, Wi-Fi app control and Modbus smart-home integration
Worth knowing
  • Labour cover is 2 years unless it's installed under Solar VIC (then 5)
  • Heat pump stops at -7°C ambient before the element steps in
  • Newer 2.0 hardware, so less long-term field history than the legacy names
