The story

What NeoPower is actually about

NeoPower is the hot water brand of IMACA Pty Ltd, going since 2010 out of Scoresby in Melbourne's east, with thousands of systems installed around the country. Having the head office 40 minutes from most of our jobs makes warranty and parts a far easier conversation than chasing an offshore importer.

The current range is the Black Shield, also badged Heat Pump 2.0. It ditches the old single-speed on-off design for a variable-speed inverter compressor that ramps up and down with what the house is actually drawing — steadier water temperature, less energy wasted and much quieter running.

The headline number is a COP of 5.4: 5.4 kW of heat for every 1 kW of power at 20°C air. That's from the inverter, a microchannel heat exchanger and high-efficiency EC fan motors working together, and it's the reason the Black Shield sits near the top of the published STC and VEEC tables — which means more rebate coming off your quote.

Three sizes: 210L for a couple, 270L for a typical family and 320L for a full house. All run 410 g of R290 natural refrigerant (GWP 3), a matte black ABS shell over an enamel-coated extra-thick carbon steel tank, a colour touch screen, Wi-Fi through the free Smart Life app and Modbus for smart-home integration.

We also stock the Black Diamond, NeoPower's earlier all-in-one. Same Scoresby outfit and the same R290 charge, but a single-speed compressor and a published COP of 4.33 rather than 5.4. Where it hits back is corrosion protection — three anodes instead of the usual one — plus a flat 6 years on all system parts. It comes in 210L, 260L and 315L, and it's the pick if you want the cheaper sticker and don't need the inverter.

NeoPower standouts

Biggest rebate certificates

18 STCs and 10 VEECs on the metro electric swap for all three sizes — among the highest published figures going.

Inverter, not on-off

Variable-speed compressor matches output to demand, so no wasteful stop-start cycling and steadier hot water.

42 dB silent mode

Quiet enough for a narrow side-of-house run past a bedroom window. Runs 42–48 dB(A) depending on the mode.

Built to sit outside

Matte black ABS shell over an enamel-coated carbon steel tank, IPX4 rated and happy from -7°C to 46°C.

Straight talk

Who NeoPower suits — and who it doesn't

Good fit if…

  • Families chasing the lowest out-of-pocket after rebates
  • Solar homes wanting app scheduling and daytime heating
  • Tight side-of-house installs where noise matters

Field pros

  • Published COP of 5.4 — top of the pack, which drives big STC and VEEC counts
  • Variable-speed inverter compressor instead of on-off cycling
  • 7-year tank and 5-year compressor cover, R290 natural refrigerant
  • Colour touch screen, Wi-Fi app control and Modbus smart-home integration

Probably not for you if…

  • Alpine sites that regularly drop below -7°C
  • Buyers who want a decades-old brand name on the tank

Field cons

  • Labour cover is 2 years unless it's installed under Solar VIC (then 5)
  • Heat pump stops at -7°C ambient before the element steps in
  • Newer 2.0 hardware, so less long-term field history than the legacy names

NeoPower warranty

  • 7 years on the tank
  • 5 years on the compressor
  • 2 years labour — 5 years on Solar Victoria Solar Homes installs
