Running costs

About $1,230 a year back in your pocket

Based on a four-person Victorian household — roughly 4,500 kWh of water heating a year at 30c/kWh. At a COP of 4.23, this unit only needs about 1,064 kWh to do the same job. Run it on the timer through the middle of the day and most of that comes off your roof, not the grid.

Got rooftop solar?

Every kWh you self-consume is worth 30c instead of the 3c feed-in you'd get for exporting it — that's the solar saving baked into the numbers below.

Reclaim Eco R290 · Energy Freedom range

Australian-made, plug-in, and dead easy to live with

The Eco R290 is Reclaim's all-in-one — heat pump and 200L tank in the one body, so there's no split pipe run and no second unit to find a spot for. It runs natural R290 refrigerant, posts a COP of 4.23 at 20°C, and Reclaim reckons on up to 80% off a conventional electric tank's bill. It's a plug-in unit, which keeps the install tidy, and the whole lot is backed by 8 years parts and labour.

Warranty runs from the install date. Tank cover needs TDS under 2,500 mg/L — over 600 mg/L you want the hard-water version with aluminium anodes. We'll flag it on the site visit.

01

Australian-made all-in-one

Built here rather than containerised in from overseas — and locally made systems attract the higher end of the rebate scale, which is a fair chunk off the sticker.

02

R290 natural refrigerant

Propane, with a global warming potential in the single digits. No phase-down risk hanging over it like the synthetic blends, so parts and gas stay available.

03

COP 4.63 on the 300L

Measured at 20°C ambient heating water from 20°C to 60°C. Reclaim quotes up to 80% off a conventional electric tank's bill.

04

1 kW of solar covers it

The draw is low enough that a small rooftop array usually pays for the day's hot water outright. Line the heating window up with the sun in the app and running cost lands near nothing.

05

Smart Life app control

Modes, timers and scheduling from your phone, so you can chase spill solar or an off-peak block. The keypad on the unit does the lot too if you'd rather not bother.

06

8 years parts and labour

Tank and refrigeration circuit both carry 8 years parts and labour in a single-family home — one of the strongest all-in-one warranties going around.

Three modes plus a backstop

Eco
The everyday setting. The heat pump alone takes the tank to 60°C each cycle — no element, lowest running cost.
Boost
Heat pump and 1.2 kW element run together to 60°C for a quick recovery. It's a one-shot job — the unit drops back to Eco after that cycle.
Holiday
Nothing heats while you're away. The tank just sits between 5°C and 10°C so it can't freeze up.
Rescue
App-only backstop. If the heat pump side plays up, the element keeps water at 60°C until a tech gets out to you.

300REC25P287 L4.632005 mm125 kg

Both are 620 mm across and 665 mm deep with the cover on. The 300L stands two metres tall, so check your ceiling if it's going in a laundry — give us a bell and we'll measure it up.

Straight talk

Our honest take on Reclaim

What we rate
  • COP of 6.02 — 5.24 kW of heat from 870 W of power
  • CO₂ (R744) holds performance in cold weather and has a GWP of 1
  • 37 dB(A) — the quietest unit going around, great near bedrooms
  • No backup element needed: 63°C water on the heat pump alone
  • 15 years on a stainless tank, 10 years parts and labour on the Wi-Fi heat pump
Worth knowing
  • Priciest option even after rebates
  • Split install takes a bit more work and a pipe run
  • Service call-outs capped at 2 hours labour and 25 km travel
