Running costs

About $1,241 a year back in your pocket

Based on a four-person Victorian household — roughly 4,500 kWh of water heating a year at 30c/kWh. At a COP of 4.68, this unit only needs about 962 kWh to do the same job. Run it on the timer through the middle of the day and most of that comes off your roof, not the grid.

All gridTypical timer: 60–80%All solar

Every kWh you self-consume is worth 30c instead of the 3c feed-in you'd get for exporting it — that's the solar saving baked into the numbers below.

Aquatech FUSION/X8

A no-fuss swap that just gets on with it

Engineered by Aquatech Solar Technologies in Australia, the X-series runs R290, a GMCC Toshiba rotary compressor and a Blue Diamond enamel tank with an impressed-current anode — so there's no anode rod to swap out down the track. Suits big households or an old 315–400L electric tank

5-year full system replacement warranty · 2 years labour

Five controller modes

Eco
60°C set · 2.50 kW/cycle

Factory default. Heat pump only, element never fires — cheapest way to run it day to day.

Standard
60°C set · 2.50 kW/cycle

Higher trigger temp so a cycle is more likely to land inside your solar or off-peak window.

Hybrid
65°C set · 3.38 kW/cycle

Heat pump to 60°C, element lifts the last 5°C. One cycle a day covers a small-to-medium house.

Hybrid+
70°C set · 4.30 kW/cycle

Stores the most hot water in a single daytime run — the pick for solar homes with big usage.

Element
70°C set · 9.99 kW/cycle

Element only. A stopgap if the heat pump needs a service — pricey to run, so don't leave it there.

01

R290 natural refrigerant

Global warming potential of 3, next to nothing. No synthetic gas phase-down hanging over it down the track.

02

Wi-Fi controller & app

Tuya-based app on the LCD controller — set modes, timers and target temp from the couch or the pub.

03

Impressed current anode

Non-sacrificial anode powered by the unit, so there's no anode rod to replace every few years. Handles soft and hard water.

04

Straight electric swap

The X6 drops into an electric 250L footprint and the X8 into a 400L — usually no new slab, no re-plumbing gymnastics.

05

Built-in solar timers

Timer windows default to 9am–6pm so the unit heats on your rooftop solar instead of buying peak power.

06

1800 W standby element

If the compressor ever plays up, the element keeps hot water coming until a tech gets out to you.

Straight talk

Our honest take on Aquatech

What we rate
  • 5-year full system replacement warranty — not just parts
  • Impressed-current anode means no anode rod to replace
  • R290 refrigerant with Wi-Fi control and solar timers
  • Fits the footprint of the electric tank it replaces
Worth knowing
  • Labour cover stops at 2 years
  • Heat pump only runs to -5°C before the element steps in
  • Tuya app is functional rather than flash
