Inverter grunt with a COP of 5.4

The Black Shield is NeoPower's second-generation unit, built by IMACA (est. 2010, Scoresby VIC). A variable-speed inverter compressor, microchannel heat exchanger and EC fan motors get it to a published COP of 5.4 — which is why it pulls some of the biggest STC and VEEC numbers on the market. Matte black ABS shell over an enamel-coated, extra-thick carbon steel tank.

Four operating modes

Standard mode
Heat pump only. Sits at 53°C on the 270L and 55°C on the 210L and 320L, adjustable 40–60°C. The everyday setting.
Eco mode
Heat pump only at 60°C, range 40–60°C. Squeezes the most out of every kilowatt — best paired with a daytime solar timer.
Hybrid mode
Heat pump lifts the tank to 60°C, then the 1.6 kW element takes it to 70°C. For a full house or a cold snap.
Element mode
Element only, 60°C default and up to 70°C. Backup if the compressor is ever out of action.
