Running costs
About $1,256 a year back in your pocket
Based on a four-person Victorian household — roughly 4,500 kWh of water heating a year at 30c/kWh. At a COP of 5.4, this unit only needs about 833 kWh to do the same job. Run it on the timer through the middle of the day and most of that comes off your roof, not the grid.
Got rooftop solar?
Time the heat pump to soak up your daytime output
Every kWh you self-consume is worth 30c instead of the 3c feed-in you'd get for exporting it — that's the solar saving baked into the numbers below.

NeoPower Black Shield · Heat Pump 2.0
Inverter grunt with a COP of 5.4
The Black Shield is NeoPower's second-generation unit, built by IMACA (est. 2010, Scoresby VIC). A variable-speed inverter compressor, microchannel heat exchanger and EC fan motors get it to a published COP of 5.4 — which is why it pulls some of the biggest STC and VEEC numbers on the market. Matte black ABS shell over an enamel-coated, extra-thick carbon steel tank.
Four operating modes
- Standard mode
- Heat pump only. Sits at 53°C on the 270L and 55°C on the 210L and 320L, adjustable 40–60°C. The everyday setting.
- Eco mode
- Heat pump only at 60°C, range 40–60°C. Squeezes the most out of every kilowatt — best paired with a daytime solar timer.
- Hybrid mode
- Heat pump lifts the tank to 60°C, then the 1.6 kW element takes it to 70°C. For a full house or a cold snap.
- Element mode
- Element only, 60°C default and up to 70°C. Backup if the compressor is ever out of action.

COP 5.4
5.4 kW of heat out for every 1 kW in at 20°C air — one of the highest published figures going around, and the reason it pulls top-shelf STC and VEEC numbers.
Inverter compressor
Variable-speed rather than the old on-off cycling. It matches output to what the house is actually using, so temperatures stay steady and running costs drop.
R290 natural refrigerant
410 g of propane with a global warming potential of 3 — around a thousandth of the older synthetic gases plenty of brands still run.
Silent mode at 42 dB
Quiet enough for a narrow side-of-house install next to a bedroom window. Runs 42–48 dB(A) depending on the mode you pick.
Colour touch screen + Wi-Fi
Smart colour touch panel on the unit, plus the free Smart Life app on Android and iOS for scheduling, monitoring and Modbus smart-home integration.
Matte black ABS shell
Enamel-coated, extra-thick carbon steel tank inside a matte black ABS shell built to shrug off Victorian weather and coastal salt.

Straight talk
Our honest take on NeoPower
- Published COP of 5.4 — top of the pack, which drives big STC and VEEC counts
- Variable-speed inverter compressor instead of on-off cycling
- 7-year tank and 5-year compressor cover, R290 natural refrigerant
- Colour touch screen, Wi-Fi app control and Modbus smart-home integration
- Labour cover is 2 years unless it's installed under Solar VIC (then 5)
- Heat pump stops at -7°C ambient before the element steps in
- Newer 2.0 hardware, so less long-term field history than the legacy names
