Running costs

About $1,229 a year back in your pocket

Based on a four-person Victorian household — roughly 4,500 kWh of water heating a year at 30c/kWh. At a COP of 4.21, this unit only needs about 1,069 kWh to do the same job. Run it on the timer through the middle of the day and most of that comes off your roof, not the grid.

Every kWh you self-consume is worth 30c instead of the 3c feed-in you'd get for exporting it — that's the solar saving baked into the numbers below.

STIEBEL ELTRON · SHP-O Premium

German engineering on 152 grams of propane

The SHP-O 301 Premium is a 300 L all-in-one running R290 — just 152 g of it, with a GWP of 0.02. COP of 4.21 to EN 16147, an A+ energy label, and the whole thing is run from your phone through the MyStiebel app. Premium adds active defrost and keeps going down to -10°C, so it suits the ranges as well as the flat suburbs.

Running it — MyStiebel app

Water Comfort
The everyday screen — set your temperature and the heat pump does the rest, leaning on ambient air and leaving the element out of it.
Boost
Brings the element in alongside the heat pump when the house is full and someone's flogged the tank.
Hot Water Plus
Pushes a bigger volume of hot water for a one-off — visitors, a big wash, a long soak.
Time Program
Set the hours it's allowed to run. Park it over the middle of the day and it'll soak up rooftop solar instead of buying grid power.
Hygiene Cycle
Scheduled high-temperature cycle to keep the tank sanitary — set and forget.
Holiday / Standby
Drops the tank back while you're away and brings it up to temperature for the day you land home.

  • Domestic single-dwelling use — commercial installs are covered on shorter terms, so tell us up front if it's a shop or a block of units.
  • It has to be installed by a licensed plumber and sparky to the manual and AS/NZS 3500, with the 850 kPa PTR fitted and drained properly.
  • Keep your install invoice — the warranty runs from the install date and STIEBEL ELTRON will ask for it on a claim.
  • Warranty is administered by STIEBEL ELTRON Australia on 1800 153 351; we lodge the claim for you if something goes wrong.
01

Only 152 g of R290

One of the smallest refrigerant charges going, and it's propane — GWP of 0.02 against the hundreds or thousands you get with synthetic gas.

02

MyStiebel app control

Built-in WLAN, so you can check the tank, change the mode and shift the timer from the couch or the departure lounge.

03

Your installer can fix it remotely

Through the Servicewelt portal a lot of setting changes get sorted without anyone coming out — fewer call-outs, quicker fixes.

04

Solar PV smart, up to 75°C

When your panels are spilling, it'll push the tank harder and bank the heat rather than exporting for a few cents.

05

German engineering, 50 years of it

STIEBEL ELTRON has been building heat pumps since 1976 and has been in Australia 30 years. Conservative, well-made gear.

06

Premium handles the cold

The 201 and 301 Premium add active defrost and run to -10°C, so they suit the Dandenongs and Macedon as well as the flat suburbs.

Getting it in

  • LocationIndoors or outdoors in a well-ventilated spot — never in a sealed cupboard
  • Air clearance400 mm minimum clear in front of and behind the air ducts
  • Diameter650 mm across the body — check the side path before you commit
  • Filled weight304 kg (200 L) / 422 kg (300 L) — the base has to be flat, solid and level
  • DrainagePTR and condensate both need a run to a safe drain point
  • Electrical220–240 V single phase, max 9.88 A operating current
  • RefrigerantR290 is flammable — flame-free zone around the unit, licensed tradies only

Keeping it sweet

Every six months (DIY)
Ease the PTR valve lever for about 10 seconds and check it discharges cleanly, then make sure the air inlet and outlet grilles are clear of leaves, cobwebs and lint.
Every five years (licensed tradie)
Check and replace the sacrificial anode, replace the PTR valve, flush the tank, clean the evaporator and fan, and clear the condensate drain. Book it in and the cylinder warranty stays sweet.

Straight talk

Our honest take on Stiebel Eltron

What we rate
  • Only 152 g of R290 — GWP 0.02, about as low-impact as it gets
  • A+ energy class with a 4.27 COP (EN 16147) on the 200 L
  • MyStiebel app plus Servicewelt remote servicing cuts call-outs
  • 7 years cylinder with 5 years labour, and 5 years on the refrigeration circuit
Worth knowing
  • Sits at the top end on price
  • 47 dB(A) is mid-pack, not the quiet leader
  • Only two sizes — 200 L and 300 L, and the body is 650 mm across
  • Plus models stop at -6°C; you need the Premium for really cold spots
