The story

What Stiebel Eltron is actually about

STIEBEL ELTRON has been at it for 100 years, has built heat pumps for 50 of them, and has had an Australian arm for the last 30. That's a long run of conservative, well-made gear rather than the latest thing rebadged.

The Australian hot water range is the SHP-O — a sleek integrated unit in 200 L and 300 L. It runs on R290 with a charge of just 152 g (GWP 0.02), posts a COP of 4.27 on the 200 and 4.21 on the 300 to EN 16147, and lands an A+ energy label.

Everything's controlled through built-in WLAN and the MyStiebel app: temperature, boost, hygiene cycle, holiday mode and a proper time program so you can run it off your rooftop solar. Your installer can also log into the Servicewelt portal and change settings remotely, which kills a lot of call-outs.

There are two tiers. Plus (SHP-O 200/300) suits climate zones 1–4 and runs to -6°C — plenty for Melbourne suburbs. Premium (SHP-O 201/301) adds active defrost and runs to -10°C, which is the one for the ranges or anywhere that frosts hard.

Good fit if…

  • Engineering-first buyers
  • Solar homes wanting proper timer control
  • Cold spots (Premium models)

Field pros

  • Only 152 g of R290 — GWP 0.02, about as low-impact as it gets
  • A+ energy class with a 4.27 COP (EN 16147) on the 200 L
  • MyStiebel app plus Servicewelt remote servicing cuts call-outs
  • 7 years cylinder with 5 years labour, and 5 years on the refrigeration circuit

Probably not for you if…

  • Bargain-hunters — it sits at the top end
  • Tight side paths: the body is 650 mm across

Field cons

  • Sits at the top end on price
  • 47 dB(A) is mid-pack, not the quiet leader
  • Only two sizes — 200 L and 300 L, and the body is 650 mm across
  • Plus models stop at -6°C; you need the Premium for really cold spots
