The story
What Powerbay is actually about
Powerbay is an Australian outfit running out of Parkinson in Queensland with a Victorian office in Cremorne, so warranty and parts are handled onshore rather than through an offshore importer.
The current line-up is the Gen II Inverter, and it's a proper step up from the old single-speed budget units. An AI-controlled inverter compressor matches output to what the house is drawing, a microchannel exchanger wraps the tank, and the whole thing runs on 340 g of R290 natural refrigerant (GWP 3).
Three sizes — 200L, 250L and 300L. The 200L and 250L pull 2.65 kW of heat from 560 W of power, which works out to a COP of 4.73; the 300L sits at 2.35 kW for a COP of 4.2. All three are hybrids with a backup element, so you've got a fallback on the coldest mornings, and the heat pump itself keeps working down to -7°C.
The tank is enamel-lined thick carbon steel with a magnesium anode, tested through 250,000 pulsation cycles and backed by a 5-year replacement warranty — the catch being a 500 kPa pressure limiting valve has to go on the cold inlet, which we fit as standard. There's also a weekly automatic sterilisation cycle that lifts the tank temperature to knock off any legionella risk.
Why people pick it
Powerbay standouts
Inverter, not on-off
AI-controlled variable-speed compressor rather than the stop-start design most budget units still run.
Sharp price after rebates
About as cheap as a rebate-approved inverter heat pump gets in VIC, and it's a 200L, 250L or 300L tank.
Weekly sterilisation
Automatically lifts the tank every seven days to kill off any bacteria or legionella — no button to press.
Wi-Fi app control
Modes, target temperature and schedules from your phone, so you can shift heating onto solar or off-peak.

Straight talk
Who Powerbay suits — and who it doesn't
Good fit if…
- Budget-conscious swaps that still want inverter tech
- Investment properties and rentals
- Smaller homes on a 200L tank
Field pros
- • AI-controlled inverter compressor, not the old on-off design
- • COP 4.73 on the 200L and 250L, on 340 g of R290
- • Weekly automatic sterilisation cycle and Wi-Fi app control
- • 5-year tank replacement warranty, 250,000-cycle tested
Probably not for you if…
- Bedroom-adjacent installs where 46 dB is too much
- Buyers wanting the longest labour cover in the market
Field cons
- • 46 dB(A) — louder than the quiet leaders
- • Labour cover is short compared with the premium brands
- • Tank warranty needs a 500 kPa PLV fitted on the inlet
Powerbay warranty
- 5 years replacement on the tank (500 kPa PLV must be fitted)
- 2 years on heat pump parts
- Australian offices in QLD and VIC
